SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) is the measurement of the energy rate absorbed by the body when exposed to (RF) electromagnetic fields in the frequency range from 100 kHz to 10 GHz.

The health effects of cell phone usage has received much attention in the media during recent years. The RF energy from mobile phones is known to generate heat in the body.  Studies have not reached conclusive results as to whether this type of exposure has detrimental effects for people’s health.

SAR Requirements

  • US: the FCC requires that phones sold have a SAR level at or below 1.6 W per kg (W/kg) taken over a volume of 1 gram of tissue.
  • EU: EN standard specify SAR limits within the EU, following IEC standards. For mobile phones and other such hand-held devices, the SAR limit is 2 W/kg averaged over 10 g of tissue IEC 62209
